Family History Centres are operated by the Church of the Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ( LDS)who maintain the best free access family records in the world.
Many of the records are available online although some are still only available on microfilm.
The main records of the LDS are held at Salt Lake City in the USA but to help members of the church and non members carrying out family history research they have centres throughout the world where access can be gained to all of the records.
Contact needs to be made at least a month before your visit to ensure that the microfilm of the records you need will be at the centre when you call.
These records can then be browsed on machines at the centre.
Although staffing is by volunteers almost invariably you will find a nice welcome and skillful assistance by the staff to help you succeed.
There are 75 centres spread across England proving reasonable access for most people.
