Family History Societies |
|
Family History Societies exist throughout the UK. Most cover the area of a County but there are societies that cover a smaller area. Some cover specific areas such as Roman Catholics or Romanies. Most have a small library of local books and genealogical information. Members in most area are active in recovery of Family History Information by transcribing BMD records and recording details of church headstones. This information is available for purchase by members of the public via CD roms. The big strength of Family History Societies is their membership. Members are experienced in local family history research and will no doubt have already broken down the brick wall that is stopping you or have the little bit of local knowledge that makes sense of some apparent senseless information about your ancestor. Societies encourage membership for a small fee which usually entitles members to a quarterly magazine and access to their information. They also hold regular meetings with speakers on family history subjects. The Federation of Family History Societies links the 160 Family History Societies and provides contact details for all of them
