Romany or Travellers Records

The History

Romanies/travellers/gypsies have been a part of the UK for as long as recorded history.

Tracing their records can be very difficult as they constantly move following work or events.

This means that their records are spread in small amounts at different locations throughout the UK and even when found it can be difficult to be sure that the records relate to your ancestor.

They made it even more difficult by avoiding various forms of registration party due to a reluctance to pay taxes etc and partly due to the poor way that they tended to be treated by authority.

What records can you find?

By far the best place to start your research is the Romany and Traveller Family History Society which has information on the site and an extensive list of links to sites that provide information on the various forms of gipsies.
