Land Registry

The History

From 1862 legislation in England and Wales has required people to notify the land Registry of changes of ownership of land.

Due to many problems and resistance from the public registration only became reliable in about 1925.

As the vast majority of houses were built after 1925 and many plots of land have changed hands since them most of the country is covered by land registration.

The Land Registry used to keep extensive details although nowadays they ask for less details, much less than that on title deeds of property.

Applications to see current and historical information held at the Land Registry can be made online for e small fee.

If your family were associated with a specific property this can be a worthwhile application to make.

What records can you find?

The land registry records are worth a go if you want to find out information about a particular house.
