The History

Many wealthy or educated people kept detailed diaries and copies of their correspondence.

Although some of these papers have been destroyed many have survived as they are regarded as family heirlooms.

They are of interest not only to people who may be related but to people whose ancestors may have worked for or be connected in some way that would lead to them being named.

What records can you find?

Many private papers are held by the National Archives or County Records Offices although some are still held by the desccendants.

These papers often have been used to provide information for biographies or local history books.
